Abundant in the weeks after heavy rain, the Tumbleweed, or Prickly Saltwort (salsola australis) spreads its seeds by detaching itself from the ground and allowing the wind to carry it along. Many are blown onto the surface of the lake, where they become embedded in creeping salt crystals, as if being swallowed.
